Event

This year's New Game Plus took place across 16th and 17th April as part of the London Games Festival. It was the second time the event ran and it felt noticeably bigger and more polished than last year, thanks in part to the new venue and a roomier layout. Even so, there was still a bit of that scrappy indie charm that made the first edition so memorable. I only attended on the Thursday but had a great time playing some new to me games and meeting the lovely developers of all of these great games. The show included a couple of stages as well with talks throughout the days. One smaller stage was aimed at students with talks on imposter syndrome for example and stories by people in the industry. The other stage was bigger and had more interviews with developers, such as Peter Molyneux. This was a lovely talk, very open and honest and a lot more positive about the future than I would have expected.

Journal

Every month I collate the games I played that are new to me, or I haven’t played in a long time and revisited. As part of Good Game Lobby Monthly Gaming Club we were playing Gris. It was really nice to re-explore the game and revisit it when I myself was in a more happy mindset. The soundscape is still really evocative and the use of colour is just so nice. I also saw more meaning in the different game mechanics this time and still jumped at one jump scare moment. It was great fun to re-play it in a group, and if you want to join us, hop into the GGL Discord. Below is my old review of the game as I did not manage to write another one yet.

Event

Disclaimer: In game pictures below are from the linked steam or kick starter pages. On April 4th I attended the event “ New Game Plus ”, as part of the London Games Festival. Last year I went to an event called WASD which was a similar set up with the focus on indie games and indie publishers. This new event was part conference and part indie games showcase, with over 70 playable demos. The ticketing was really reasonable and I only got a ticket for the Friday showcase event. Last year I had only just gotten my steam deck and was really shy about playing any demos in front of developers, but this year I was determined and managed to play 14 demos in total. I also chatted to a few developers and met the lovely John from Gaming in the Wild , who was one of the first podcasters and YouTubers I consistently listened to. The event had a really nice and friendly atmosphere and everyone from attendees to exhibitors and staff were lovely. Even London showed its best side by being sunny and T-shirt weather warm. Brief segway, talking about T-shirts. My Elden Ring T-shirt got many comments and limited sizes are still left to buy here . (nothing to do with me, but it is an independent artist and limited and ethically run T-shirt company, so thought I’d share). Now back to the event. Each demo had a dedicated screen and seat, unless it was multiplayer, then 2-4 people could take a seat and play together. I’ll now list some of the games I played and what I thought with links to their steam pages and kickstarters.

This flu took us all out and I had brain fog for two weeks after, so did not feel up for trying many new games or games with more combat until later on in the month. Instead I revisited many games such as, Dave the Diver, Hades and Frostpunk, and of course Vampire Survivors. But I did try a couple new ones.

Event

I re-discovered video games in anger in 2024. At the end of 2023 I finally played the main storyline of Skyrim and completed it (I bought it in 2011 when it first came out). Being winter I then wanted another fantasy sequel game and ended up with Elden Ring!? This took over my life for a few months (I am yet to become Elden Lord though). The steam deck followed in March 2024 and with it a massive curiosity to learn more about the industry again. I therefore sought out several local to me events and attended these immersing myself.

Journal

November was a bit eclectic and didn’t really go to “plan”. I ended up up travelling twice and once didn't take my steam deck with me as it was kind of for work. I am also glad I didn't because I actually went to bed at a reasonable time. The one game I played 15 mins of that is not mentioned is Oxenfree as I didn’t give it the time of day just yet. One for December. :)

Journal

October was an eclectic mix of games, from puzzle games to metroidvanias. I am actually surprised how much I managed to play considering work was really busy and I had a few social events too. I completed the main stories of 3, abandoned 1, and kept one as a pick up and play every now and then game. A bit like a 10 mins palette cleanser. :D
